Bird Rock Coffee Roasters - DelMar CA

Bird Rock Coffee Roaster - Delmar, CA

Saturday was our first semi-official ride for the blog. We are new to this blogging and want to take it slow as we feel our way around and learn how to do the simple things, like changing our profile name. For Saturday's ride, we met up on what is becoming our meetup corner and headed towards the coast. The ride itself wasn't the most challenging, but the first few miles together was an uphill climb to the HWY 56 bike path on Black Mountain Road. We then proceeded east to Camino Del Sur where we turned and headed north to San Dieguito. Turning west on San Dieguito, we headed down the Three Witches, an approximately 800 foot climb that occurs in three segments. Thus, the Three Witches name. (We will cover this climb some more in the future.) Following our climb, San Dieguito took us to El Camino Real, where we turned and headed south to Carmel Valley Road. There we turned and headed West again towards the ocean to reach our destination, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters.

This recently opened location for the local roaster is right on Carmel Valley Rd at 2212 Carmel Valley RD, Del Mar, CA 92014.

The weather was perfect for a cup of joe: Overcast and cool, but not too cold. I sat down after storing my bike. Note there were no bike racks so I had to store the bike off to the side on the deck. I sent the Kid in to get us a couple of drinks.

The menu is pretty simple. Espresso, brews, teas, and pour overs. The assumption is that most people know what they want and don't need a lot of prompting by a detailed menu. My initial thought was that the pour over prices seemed on the high side, even for Del Mar, CA, but then the Kid pointed out the specialty beans they offer and it made some sense. The place was busy, so it did take a few minutes before our drinks were ready. Given the shops location, we were surprised by the crowd on a Saturday morning.
The Kid ordered a cappuccino and got me a cinnamon latte.  As is our custom, we went with the "fine china" for the drinks versus paper cups. Both drinks arrived with a latte art heart. The mugs include the Bird Rock Coffee Roasters signature logo on the characterized VW Bus.

The actual VW Bus was sitting on the street outside which we checked out before riding back home. Both drinks were the right temperature, smooth, and delicious. The hint of cinnamon in my latte was a nice flavor addition, but after tasting the Kid's cappuccino I agreed that the coffee was good, even without the cinnamon kicker.

The deck seating was ample and diverse: High tops with stools if you are working on your laptop, upholstered chairs for lounging and chatting with a friend, and a road side counter with low stools for staring out into the lagoon. Too bad you don't have a view of the ocean from this location, but as a local you know where it is.

As we polished off our drinks, I noticed a friendly reminder of where we were on my coffee rim.

A nice touch for a nice place with really good coffee.  We look forward to stopping by in the future.
